The Thermal Baths of Margherita di Savoia undoubtedly represent the greatest tourist feature of the town; there are used the therapeutic properties of spring waters, muds and salts originated in the Saline; thanks to salso-bromine-iodine waters, the famous “red waters” of the Saline, the Baths are, in fact, attended nearly all year long from people coming from all over Italy, from the Mediterranean Countries and from other European States; cloudy and with a slightly sulphurous smell, these waters have an high natural radioactivity, are rich of iodine, bromine and, most of all, of chlorine. The typical red colour comes from the presence of a flagellated protozoon, the Salt Dunaliella in highly elevated concentration even if they are considered bacteriologically pure.
The rational use of the basins salty waters curative properties goes back to the end of July 1930, with the opening of the first, rudimental Thermal Baths, but the use of spring waters for curative purposes was effectively born with the development of the town itself till going back to Hannibal (210 B.C..); it is said, indeed, that after the Canne battle, Hannibal bathed in the Salpi “red waters” to cure his wounds and to benefit of their strengthening power.
Before the opening of the thermal baths, many patients used to bath, in summer time, in the muddy drain channels of the waters, without any medical supervision. In the current thermal cures, instead, the spring waters are diluted with sea waters, in order to grant a rational therapeutic use; because temperature, degree of concentration and time of immersion vary according to the pathologies. The same criteria are also adopted for muds: they are deposited and amalgamated in appropriate bathtubs.
After the modest system of the 1930, another one in masonry was built in 1947, replaced then in 1988 from the current one, more modern and efficient, that covers a surface of approximately 15.000 square meters; the thermal baths are set in front of the sea and a wide beach runs along them, moreover the baths have sanitary equipments fit to the most specific needs. To the traditional units for the inhaling cures, the mud-bath therapy, the several kinds of massage, they have been added the centre of Rhinogenous Deafness, the centre of Broncopneumologia and Respiratory Rehabilitation, the gym, the Gynaecological unit and the Aesthetic Medicine centre.
The thermal cures, together with several climatic sea factors such as: the beneficial of sun, the marine aerosol on the shoreline, swimming, and the action of the wave motion, makes the stay in Margherita di Savoia “Terme” effectively under the sign of sun, sea and health..
